Neonatal intensive care unit

The Cabrini Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a Level III Regional N.I.C.U. specializing in the comprehensive medical/surgical care for newborns through 3 months of age, including both low and high-risk infants. While the main focus is to care for the premature infant, newborns requiring any type of intensive care, including ventilator support are admitted to NICU. The unit has been open for over 20 years, and has the reputation of experience and expertise in the Central Louisiana area. The Unit serves a 9 parish radius with both ground and air ambulance transports. A specially trained transport team answers the call for all infant transports to and from CHRISTUS Cabrini Hospital.

Many of the registered nurses in NICU have received national certification in the field of inpatient neonatal nursing. As well, the NICU team attends all high-risk deliveries in the Labor and Delivery Unit. With a special infant security program in place, the NICU is a locked/closed unit.

The Cabrini NICU is staffed by:

  • 2 neonatologists
  • Nurse manager
  • 24 hour neonatal nurse practitioner coverage
  • 24 hour nursing and respiratory staff (certified in neonatal resuscitation)

Educational Support provided for families of the Cabrini NICU:

  • Social Worker
  • Lactation Consultants
  • InHouse Mothering (Family spends at least 24 hours with us to make the transition home as smooth as possible)
  • CPR
  • Infant care with regards to medication, monitors, safety precautions & emergent care.
