Respiratory care

At the CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospitals Respiratory Department, respiratory therapists work with people who have breathing problems. The staff provides services to all age groups from the premature infants to the geriatric patient. The respiratory care department operates under the orders of physicians.

The following services provided consist of both diagnostic and supportive care:

  • Pulmonary Functions: Test the patients lungs to assist the physician in diagnosing specific lung problems, shortness of breath and determining the effectiveness of therapy.
  • Bronchoscopy: This test is performed by placing a small fiberoptic tube through the airway into the lungs. This allows the physicians to have a direct view of the airway and the lungs. Abnormal areas, if present, can be evaluated through lab testing of small specimens.
  • Respiratory Therapy: Respiratory Therapist provide care to patients as prescribed by the medical staff. Services offered are: Mechanical Ventilation, Bedside Pulmonary functions, arterial blood gas analysis, bedside bronchoscopy, patient education, breathing treatments, oxygen administration, tracheostomy care and chest physiotherapy.
